The Newcastle Knights have confirmed that Jack Bird is the next big star on their shopping list!
Bird, 21, contract with the reigning premiers the Cronulla Sharks end at the end of the 2017 season and the Knights believe Bird is the perfect signing to accompany rookie sensation Kalyn Ponga, who the Knights signed last month from the Cowboys.
Bird is one of the hottest properties off contract at the end of 2017, but says as long as the Sharks offer him a reasonable contract extension he’ll almost certainly remain with the premiers.
“I just want to be comfortable where I am. I’m happy to stay at the Sharks”. Bird said
“Hopefully by the start of the season I want to try and get it sorted by then. I don’t want to go into the footy season thinking where I’m going to be playing in 2018.”
But also said, “It’s a short career. You’re going to take as much as you can get to have a good career and be set for after footy, I would be stupid if I didn’t listen to other offers out there.”
Knights CEO Matt Gidley confirmed his club’s interest in Bird.
“He is a player we’d like to have a conversation with,” Gidley said.
“I am sure a number of clubs are interested, Cronulla included.
“Clubs can negotiate with him now. We haven’t spoken to him or his manager but he’s someone we would certainly be looking at.
“He is young, highly talented and is already a rep player. He has a huge future in front of him. If he is interested in coming to Newcastle, that’s the first step.
“There is the lifestyle of Newcastle and we are building a young, talented team. Jack would certainly fit in there.
“We have the ability to bring in further marquee players but it’s important we get the right ones to complement these kids we have coming through.
“There are a number of players we are looking at and we will look to wrap things up in the new year.”
