As it stands, Wayne Bennett will finish up as Brisbane Broncos coach at the end of the 2019 season after the club decided not to extend his contract, but it is understood he won’t be alone.
Bennett, who has coached the Broncos in two stints and won six premierships with the club, is contracted until the end of next season and had initially hoped to extended his tenure beyond 2019.
But discussions with Broncos chairman Karl Morris saw Bennett agree he would see out his current contract and finish in what will be his 26th season with the club.
Darius Boyd followed Bennett when he departed for the Dragons, Newcastle and then back to the Broncos. Now it is believed that out-of-contract winger Corey Oates will do the same and follow Bennett where ever lands for 2019 and beyond. At this stage, It is understood he will sign a 1-year contract and will stay a Bronco and move elsewhere when Wayne departs.
But rumours have placed the super coach joining the Wests Tigers in 2019 and if this is the case, it is believed Corey Oates have informed Bronco officials that he will be joining his mentor.
Still a lot of water to go under the bridge here, with a lot of factors to be played out. Watch this space.
