It is understood that the Canberra Raiders have shown strong interest in St George Illawarra’s fullback Matt Dufty for the 2019 season and beyond.
Matt Dufty’s future at St George-Illawarra isn’t as rosy as most would believe.
Contracted until the end of 2019, the Dragons attempted to start the process of extending Dufty’s contract. However, the young fullback’s asking price is far beyond what the club is willing to pay.
Reports have suggested that the Dragons are trying to offload the 22-year-old ahead of next season because they don’t like his work ethic. Enter Ricky Stuart and the Canberra Raiders.
It is believed Ricky Stuart intends to move current fullback Jack Wighton into the halves to replace departed play-maker Blake Austin, who join Warrington Wolves in the English Super League on a 3-year deal.
Stuart believes Dufty is the perfect solution to replace Wighton and the Raiders would then boast one of the most dangerous back-lines in the league.
Dufty made his NRL debut in 2017 and has scored 15 tries in 32 games for the club, but he appears to be on his way out with Canberra now entering the race for his services. It has also been reported that at least four Super League teams are understood to be interested in him.
