The word coming out of Redfern is that the Broncos may be happy to cut James Roberts loose before June 30, given his recent poor attitude and a nagging Achilles injury.
Roberts’ ill-discipline has seen him fall out of favour with Broncos coach Anthony Seibold and the speedster has not been picked since round three, but he’s also nursing an Achilles injury.
The Blues flyer signed his current four-year deal under former coach Bennett and although contracted until 2021, Roberts could be released and return to Souths where his career began.
Roberts played his best football under Wayne Bennett at the Broncos and the veteran coach thinks he can still get value out of the enigmatic centre.
South Sydney maybe given $1.5 million in salary cap relief to compensate the shock retirement of Greg Inglis, and Roberts could be named as his replacement within the coming weeks.
Broncos legend Gorden Tallis said he wouldn’t be surprised to see Roberts return to Bennett’s high-flying Rabbitohs this season.
The 26-year old has made 78 appearances and scored 40 tries for the Broncos since crossing over from the Gold Coast Titans at the end of the 2015 season.
