The San Franciso 49ers are believed to have made contact with Cleveland Browns for a possible Trade for Josh Gordon for the 2017 season
Gordon, 25, has been suspended for the past two seasons due to violations of the NFL’s drug policy. But, the Cleveland Browns receiver is not giving up on his NFL career just yet, despite his recent struggles.
Gordon applied for reinstatement on March 1 and expects to hear back from the NFL in May. It is understood the 49ers made contact with Gordons’ management and are interested in what response he receives from the NFL.
The 25-year-old was an All-Pro in 2013, but only appeared in five games in 2014 and hasn’t played in a regular-season game since.
Even if he is reinstated, it’s doubtful the Browns will give him another chance. The Browns are likely try to trade him or possibly even release him.
The Cleveland Browns have his ‘rights’ for Gordon for two more years after he’s reinstated and the Patriots are believed to be interested in a possible trade for Gordon.
The Browns have given Gordon numerous chances, and he hasn’t been able to stay on the field for them. He’s been suspended for 43 of their last 48 games, and hasn’t seen the field since Dec. 21, 2014.
The 49ers believe Josh Gordon’s speed and power could provide another dimension to a offense that lacks attacking weapons. The 49ers sign former Washington Redskin Wideout Pierre Garcon, as their big bodied target and now look for their deep threat.
New Coach Kyle Shanahan believes a fit and healthy – and clean – Josh Gordon would be a perfect fit for his offense.
The Question is, is Josh Gordon’s ‘Ceiling’ worth the gamble to bring him to to the Bay Area for 2017.
The 49ers would most definitely offer Gordon a 1-year ‘prove it deal’ and see if the 25-year can reach the heights of his 2014 season, where he played 14 games, had 87 receptions and went for 1646 yards. Gordon scored 9 touchdowns in that season also.
