Legendary sports caller Bruce McAvaney has revealed he has cancer.
The 64-year-old was diagnosed with leukaemia two years ago after an abnormal blood test.
It is understood McAvaney was unable to call the Australian Open this year for the first time since 1990 due to the illness.
“It is quite strange to say I have leukaemia because I feel well,” he said.
“It could jump out of the ground at any moment,”
“It had been building for a little while. But last year was a bit of the straw that broke the camel’s back,” he said.
Despite the news, McAvaney fully intends to continue honouring his commitments with Channel Seven in the short-term.
