Mitch Rein continues to look for a immediate release from Penrith and Newcastle maybe be his landing spot.
Rein, 27, currently stuck in reserve grade, is playing some of his best football, requested a release to join Parramatta last month, but the is understood the deal stalled as Rein’s asking price was far too high for the Eels.
Rein signed a 1-year deal with the Panthers at the end of the 2016 season as St George Illawarra, could not come to terms on a contract renewal, as once again Rein was asking for much more then the Dragons valued him at.
The Newcastle Knights are believed to be on the search for a new hooker as new recruit Rory Kostjasyn’s pre-season throat injury is feared that it could now be career ending.
Kostjasyn continues to struggle with breathing problems 12 weeks after receiving an accidental blow to his throat. Despite two operations on his windpipe to repair the damage.
Newcastle Coach was not at all positive on Rory Kostjasyn’s playing future going forward and how long he faced on the sidelines.
“I’d say it’s indefinite,’’ Brown said.
“We’re not sure, to be honest with you. We’re not sure if he’ll come back in two weeks, or four weeks, or if he’ll come back. We don’t know at this stage. But it’s not positive at the moment.’’
Nathan Brown was asked by a reporter, Could it be career ending?
“That would be a possibility,” he replied.
With that bleak diagnosis from the Newcastle coach, the Knights are understood to have made contact with Rein’s management once the Parramatta deal broke down.
It is believed the Newcastle Knights are prepared to offer Rein a ‘Prove it deal’ for the remainder of the 2017 season, with the possibility of a 12 month extension.
Rein is expected to once again request a release from the Penrith Panthers with the hope to join the Knights within the coming weeks.
